Now that Bush has drawn the connection between insurgents
and the protection of oil sources in the middle East, can we
safely assume that he will back other sources of energy other
than oil?

It is not so easy.
President Bush may want to develop alternative energy sources, but Big Oil, and corporations have a LOT of power and influence in Washington.
We need to start small and push our wants up the chain. Write your state and federal legislators and demand more movement on other fuels. There are MANY to choose from.
Things the US needs to look into – Thermal depolymerization (oil from trash), Coal to Oil (yes, this is clean), Solar (why are new houses not built with solar panels to heat water etc?) Wind – (most rural homes in windy locations could use windpower from their property)
Ethanol from corn is NOT the big solution the media wants you to believe. It takes more energy to make a gallon of ethanol than you get out of it. Sugar ethanol (like Brazil) is a better solution. Soy based bio-diesel is a great solution! We run our truck on this today. (No diesel smell either – it smells like french fries)
Write your Congressman – and vote today!

knowing human psychology, id say that we will use up every last drop of oil and every last cubic foot of natural gas before we seriously start using alternative fuels

We are spending lots of money on alternate fuel sources.
Just none of them can compete economically with the cost of oil.

You and everyone else are already spending money on alternative fuel whether you want to or not!!!
The use of corn for making ethanol has pushed up the price of corn and reduced the amount available to feed the poor. So you are paying more for corn products. The corn used for just one tank of fuel would feed a man for a year!
Sugar cane used for fuel has astonishingly doubled the world price for sugar in just eighteen months!!!! Afforestation is occurring to plant sugar or the crops deposed by sugar growth – causing real damage to the ecology!!!!
