Why are people so unwilling to accept the concept of climate change?

I understand if they don’t know much about it. But they seem so adamant about denying it. The theory of global climate change and its causes are widely agreed upon in the scientific community. It is science that has been studied for decades, and is not a fanatical religious belief.

So, why can people not accept it?

  1. I’m speaking for myself here. I’m not anti or pro global warming, but this is what I think about it. The way I see it, the data that scientists have is still being added to. Weather is a complex thing. One part of the world might be colder, still another might be hotter. There are cycles to the world’s weather. Maybe all the hype about global warming is just a natural cycle the earth is going through, you know what I mean? The computer age has only just begun, and it takes computers to analyze data and build models of what the earth’s weather is really doing.

So I guess I’m sitting on the fence here. Maybe they have it all figured out right now. Maybe they don’t. I don’t know.

Whatever the case, I’m not concerned with my contribution to greenhouse gases. I live a pretty simple life. I’m not a big consumer. I don’t travel a lot. I turn off the lights. Hang out my clothes. If anyone needs to change their lifestyle because of global warming it’s the bigwig’s who are spending the big bucks.

  2. For the same reason they can’t accept that God would do bad things to good people.

It bothers them too much to accept it. It challenges their world view beyond what they are willing to think could be true.

It disrupts their beliefs — and if that belief was wrong, what else are they wrong about??
Best to not think about it and just consider those who say such things to be heretics.

But I think they would be happier in the long run coming to terms with their pain of a world that didn’t measure up to their belief structure.

  3. I think people just want to live their life and not have to deal with that bs.

  4. The reason people have a hard time wrapping their minds around it I believe is based in the political realm. Take Al Gore’s movie for instance. Got a lot of people interested, and then some of the worlds foremost experts on the subject hammer numbers claims used in the documentary. Mainly the co2 levels and it being man made. Leaves the average person not knowing what to think. The right denies it and the left believes it like a religion. The fact is we are experiencing climate change, its a natural process. Its been much hotter and much colder, and will be again I am sure.

  5. Basically, as Al Gore said in "An Inconvenient Truth", people don’t want to acknowledge that climate change is an issue, because once they do, the inevitable truth is that they’ll have to do something about it. We as a society just seem to have this veil of lethargy on us that we can’t seem to fight off and it’s very dangerous for us. We are inactive and don’t want to bother ourselves with issues we consider to be "not our problems". Yet the environment is everyone’s responsability and we more often then not take it for granted.

Things have to change and just hoping they will isn’t doing anyone any good. Time to start a change, but to change we have to accept that something is wrong… and people are not at that stage yet =/

It’s live and let live and that’s that.

  6. the simple answer is. over the past billion years the earth has never had a steady climate it is in constant flux somtimes major somtimes subtlel so you get used to change and ignore it. untill it affects you personally

  7. Why can’t some people think for themselves?

  8. It is human nature to avoid a problem rather than face it. So, when people are confronted with a problem at hand, people delay it until it is too late. However, climate change is something that has the potential to affect everybody on this planet.
The only thing that can be done is to make many people aware and accept this change so that the combined efforts of all people can be a significant force in tackling this issue.

  9. Al Gore.
Explain to me in terms of global warming why and how the Ice Ages
    occurred.

By taking core samples of the ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica and from the ocean floor, it is shown that the earth has gone trough multiple shifts in climate temperatures over a couple of million years.

al gore wants us to believe that we and we alone are responsible for the present "global warming" that is BS. cap in trade carbon tax
all because of false Information. And he got as Nobel Prize for this nonsense.!!

  10. people are just idiots and are too scared to face the fact that we are destroying the earth.
they also won’t believe that our natural gas and coal resources are running out, and fast.
they are closed-minded people, not believing to see what they don’t want to see. it’s fear and uncertainty. i think it’s really stupid and they should stop denying what is happening to our world we live in. i wish people would understand and would try to help.

  11. That is just ignorant to assume that people who don’t accept obvious propagada don’t understand the issue. There has been no significant warming that can be attributed to incresed greenhouse warming. Their computer models require certain things to happen in the envirnoment that haven’t happened. There is no increased warming in the mid troposphere relative to the ground. That is a signature of greenhouse warming in all the computer models which is what the left relys on like it is a fanatical religious belief. Their holy grail of evidence, the computer models, indicates no increased greenhouse warming.

First off it hasn’t warmed significantly for 70 years. There has been no significant warming in the last 10 years. The science has been corrupted by the hundreds of billions of dollars at stake. The climate "scientists" which act like political activists only get paid if they show dire results. Since that obviously haven’t been demonstrated in the real world, they have nothing substancial to base their speculations on. I don’t accept something just because some politcally motivated leftist says the world as we know it is going to end. This is the same game they have been playing for decades.

  12. Whoever denies climate changes is simply ignorant.
Now that the term "global warming" pops up very often among those people who labored under the delusion that climate is meant to be static and with unmeasurable help from the mainstream media: THEY FORMED THEIR OWN OPINION: IT’S MAN MADE. Most of them are people driven by their emotions or or people who profit or will profit with this hypothesis.
It is easy to conclude that climates are stable when you don’t have much (or any) knowledge of Earth’s history.

THE CLIMATE CHANGES, HAS ALWAYS CHANGED AND WILL ALWAYS CHANGE, regardless of what humans do.

  13. They don’t accept it because the people pushing it have an obvious bias and are politically motivated. The alarmists ignore anything that doesn’t fit their bias and they distort everything into something harmful. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad how easy it to manipulate some people.

  14. i guess its a strong lobby of energy which has prevented a lot of pro nature things happening. there has been no dearth of scientific evidence proving ecological damage

  15. The wont believe. We need to evangelize them like they have to us.

  16. people are very willing to accept the fact that climate changes. the breakdown starts when people discuss whether or not the change is detrimental to our world and whether or not there is anything we can do about it?

  17. You make a false statement here.

Yes, the theory of global climate change is widely accepted, and well documented. However, the causes are not agreed upon, and are widely disputed.

I’m fairly certain that you do not have a scientific background. I’m a geologist. The formal field of geology is only about 200 years old, and it is still referred to as a young, untested science. You refer to climatology…all of 30 years old….as an accepted and creditable science.

Real scientists view it as a theory that is still in diapers…lol

  18. First is those who are skeptical of the alarmist hype have educations that give them a wider and deeper perspective on the subject. When your education is in subjects that work daily with subject matter that shows the worlds climate has had much larger fluctuations in recent history that are well known to be natural it is hard to accept claims that the modern optimum is unnatural and unusual.

Second the key claim of industrially produced co2 being the central cause of the warming is to the well educated so ridicules it is hardly worth discussion. Those promoting warming have used co2 samples for their experiments so saturated with water vapor that the results given are for water vapor (humidity) not co2. Knowing these simple basics makes it very hard to not get extremely angry about the deliberate distortions ot truth being propagated by the alarmist agitators.

  19. It’s a mix of emotions, superstitious beliefs, fear of government, distrust of politicians, and a 6th grade understanding of Science. When the falsehoods that the oil companies spew are injected into the ‘debate’, it becomes a shouting match. All sorts of ideas ,fantasies, fears, confusion, and finally insults are trotted out to somehow disprove the facts. It then becomes a circular style argument. If you do present scientific facts, they roll out the ‘GOD’ stuff, and how humans can’t affect ‘GODs’ plan. Then it goes way out there with assumptions on Science that highlight their ignorance of Science. That’s when they get desperate, start flinging poo. They enjoy dragging AlGore through the mud, as if attacking a washed up politician is somehow proof that AGW is not happening. Then things get weird, they deny Science itself, saying the Scientists are ALL in on the biggest fraud ever perpetrated. When that fails, the deniers start being ‘weather reporters’ with statements like,"It’s cold outside, that means AGW is not happening!" LOL !
So, if you like conspiracy theories, hate the govt.,distrust politicians, believe in "Intelligent Design",and have a 6th grade education, then a well paying career in denying global climate change is waiting for you in what’s left of the GOP !

  20. Because it’s WRONG.

Why can’t people accept the concept that I’m a super hero from the planet Zog?

  21. MANBEARPIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i’m SERIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. The problem is you’re expecting them to be logical. People in denial are not logical.

There are so many reasons to reduce greenhouse gas emissions besides just addressing global warming. There’s ocean acidification, our addiction to foreign oil, peak oil, smog, domestic green jobs, etc. etc.

The problem is that they’re afraid of carbon "tax" (they think any regulation of CO2 is a "carbon tax") and bigger government. They’re short-sighted and don’t realize that in the long run, regulating CO2 will save a ton of money. All they’re concerned about is paying a few cents more for energy and gasoline in the short-term.

Like I said, denial is not logical.

  23. People don’t want to face reality. I have some friends who have the education of 5th graders and who have NEVER taken a biology, ecology, or even a science class in their entire lives. They don’t even know what an ecosystem is…but yet they are ADAMANT that climate change is NOT happening. They don’t even really understand the concept at all, yet they claim anyone that believes in it is wrong. I on the other hand have a degree in science, and zoology, and I work as a wildlife biologist and have read TONS of articles and books on the subject, plus have gone to conferences on global warming and have heard papers presented by the actual scientists doing the research. I assume most people are like my friends..they make up facts based on lies they make up in their own heads without ANY research, education, proof, or thought going into their decision not to believe. Most people are sheep and don’t bother to find out the truth about anything..or base all that they know on one source.

  24. Explain to me how average global temperature, a simple statistic, distills down and evaluates something as complex as global climate.

  25. Everyone accepts that the climate goes through changes.

Most simply do not buy into the premise that human activity is causing these changes. When you think about it logically it makes no sense.

It’s hard to convince people that we’re warming the planet when we know for a fact that the planet has been much warmer in the past.

There is no perfect temperature for the planet. It’s always changing, so get used to change and accept the fact that change is the only constant.
