I can recycle everything else but seems like such a waste to throw these in the landfill.

YOU CAN PUT THE USED OIL IN THE CONTAINER AND TAKE IT TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE. FOR EXAMPLE YOU CAN GO TO AUTO ZONE AND THEY HAVE A LARGE CONTAINER JUST FOR THE USED OIL.
HOPE IT HELPS.

yeah, auto parts stores or service centers would help you.

For the most part these containers are even being thrown away by many auto parts stores. The main reason that you can’t put them into a curbside recycling program is due to the contents. Plastic has a tendency, especially over time, to leach or take in some of the material contained in the bottle. Often times, the oil residue is a contaminant to many plastics recycling programs and manufacturing processes. Seems like a bit of a redundancy since plastic is petroleum based, but that’s the primary reason it’s an issue for recycling and usually has to be trashed in the landfill.
