What to do when you see someone litter?
After a very long day at work I finally made to the last stop light before my house and before the light turned green the person in front of me open their door and dropped a bag of trash on the road. In all the places I’ve lived I have never actually seen someone do this, it made me livid!
I tapped my horn but, don’t think anyone knew why I was honking. Swearing and making rude gestures doesn’t seem like a good way to get my point across. I regret not writing down the plate number but what would I do with this? Post it on Craig’s list?
Anyway, I’m hoping for some good suggestions on a tactful way to call someone out on littering and let them know others don’t appreciate it.
The reason it was hard to know what to do in this situation is that it was in the middle of a busy intersection and I could not get out of my care with risking getting hit or causing an accident. So unfortunately I couldn’t go and talk to the person.
sorry care should be car doing to many things at once
I’m sure I’ll get reamed for this answer, but…
Sometimes I think it’s ok that people littler. I think that pavement, sprawling suburbia, cars, etc, is litter. I think that the trash service helps us to forget about the amount of trash that we create, by making it "disappear." Someone throwing their bag of trash on the road is really the same as someone throwing it in the trash can, it’s just that we have to look at it when it’s in the road. It all goes back to the earth, releases toxins, etc, no matter where it is.
I’m not advocating littering, concentrated waste is better than waste everywhere (we can at least save some rivers, etc), but really, it’s all litter.
I know that’s not an answer, but it’s what I thought when I read your question.
tell them to not litter
and argue if i have to
jk
ill just throw it away myself
Someone blatenly littering like that, I would pick it up, follow them to the next stop light, hand it to them and tell them they dropped something.
Then take their plate number and call the police, especially if you can find another witness.
that’s a hard one because it’s so infuriating.
i don’t know.
shout at them but make sure you have a speech prepared about 70 words i did that and they havnt done it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!since!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a coworker that littered while at a stop light. At the next stop light a lady tapped on her window, gave her trash back to her and said "Excuse me ma’am, I believe you dropped this back at the last light". She was so embarassed, she said that she has never littered again.
i wouldve picked up that trash, and threw it at their car at the next stop light. that would pretty much get the point across…
Report their plate number to the local authority is my first reaction after the compulsory flipping of the bird. What really burns me is people flicking out their cigarette butts….makes me wish i could just slam on the gas and rear end them!
In Holland it is illegal and get s a very heavy fine
you could take the number and report them
or pick it up and politely say that they forgot this or by mistake dropped it
or follow them home and deposit it in their garden
i am sure they don’t do it in their living room so why do they thing they can do it in the living room of lets say the homeless people
i tell them to pick it up
I give them the finger ! You don’t mess with Texas !
You can take their plate number and if possible a description of the driver. Meanwhile I would probably throw it away myself rather than leave it there… They may not be charged with littering, but atleast the policeman can have a talk with him/her so they won’t do it again hopefully. One person a day that changes a bad habit is better than zero.
Well if I don’t see the person doing it I usually pick it up and throw it in the garbage. If I see someone dropping garbage I would most likely go up to them and let them know that littering is not acceptable. More less guilt trip them into cleaning up after themselves. Just let them know that its disgusting to litter and thank them when they do clean it up.
I have one advantage most people don’t have I’m a resource officer so if they don’t listen I can charge them for littering.
Hope that helps
I just pick it up and put it in the nearest bin. Be careful if you do this though, it could contain sharps.
You can definitely get their liscense plate number and report them..littering is a crime. Dumping has become a huge problem around where I live and they have special groups of people that have been hired specifically to drive around looking for people dumping and arresting them. There are posters all over neighborhoods urging people to turn in these dumpers. I have found garbage dumped in the wildlife area I work in..was able to go through the trash and find out who dumped it and I reported it and the people that dumped it got fined.
