What exactly does water conservation do to help the environment?
What exactly does taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth do to help the environment? I do all these things anyway, because i know i am supposed to, I just don’t know why ![]()
assuming you live close enough to a city to receive treated water and not well water….
when you turn on the faucet the water coming out is flowing into your home from a water treatment plant. that plant has taken water from some body of water (river, lake, aquifer) and treated it. by ‘treating’ the water they do a number of things including adding chemicals.
all the water that flows down your drain and away from your house goes to a sewage treatment plant where it is again ‘treated’. here it is placed in large pools and allowed to sit so that heavy particles can settle to the bottom. there are a number of strainers to remove hair and other particles. and finally, more chemicals are added to the water to kill bacteria, fungi etc.
there are certain things that cannot be completely removed from drinking water. there was recently media coverage about the high levels of prescription drugs being found in drinking water. everything from aspirin to hormones such as estrogen were found. the effects of the chemicals on the environment are profound. estrogen has been found to cause male reptiles and amphibians to actually change sex into females. this would obviously have a detrimental effect on the wildlife population as the animals cannot mate. the effect these chemicals have on us long term in not certain
.
in conclusion, by wasting water you are wasting money that has to be spent on treating wastewater, placing a strain on the natural river, lake, etc from where the water is obtained, and depleting water stores. .
we’re running out of water and we need it to make the trees grow and for us to live. look at a water cycle
Potable water is a precious resource, most of the water on earth is not fit for consumption, so for starters you’re conserving that. When water is used and re-enters the hydrologic cycle there’s no guarantee it will come back as potable water. You’re also saving energy, transportation, construction, and treatment costs (moentary and environmental) for delivery of fresh water to you and removal of waste water.
I don’t understand how people can think that taking a shower is wasting water, once water is used, it goes back into the environment and wi;; be used again somewhere down the line.
Just by it’s basic nature, water cannot be wasted.
What does happen is that water pumped out of the ground, lowers the water table, because it takes years for water to work its way back into the ground water.
It either ends up in the Ocean, and thus raising the water level of the ocean, or into the environment watering the land by way of rain, and eventually back into rivers running back into the ocean.
The water shortage comes from too large a population living in too small an area and over using the ground water.
Because you’re using electricity to pump the water, which is bad for the environment. Other than that, I have tremendous faith the water cycle can take care of itself.
