What effect will global warming have on invading killer bees?
.
I was wondering what the effects of global warming would be on the swarms of killer bees that are going to be invading sometime soon. Has any research been done into this question? Or were the bees all killed by acid rain, or fried by the hole in the ozone before they could get here?
.
I’m guessing the warming will cause the Killer Bees to over-heat in flight, seriously pissing them off. Angry Killer Bees will soon mutate into Serial Killer Bees and go on a killing spree throughout America!
Acid Rain and the Ozone Hole are problems that have been reduced dramatically in the last 20 years, due to better catalytic convertors on smokestacks, and the ban on CFC’s. The only barrier to killer Bees remaining is the protective shroud of Ash donated by the good people of Iceland. It may be the only thing that can save us now!
"The no-fly zone across much of Britain after Iceland’s huge volcanic eruption this week is set to remain in force over the weekend" – The bees won’t be much of a threat if they have to walk everywhere!
The so-called "killer" bees have been interbred with bees from Africa. They are a problem, at the moment in warmer areas. I would assume that global warming would speed their spread northward if anything. However, I don’t think that temperature is what is keeping the Africanized bees to the south. It may just be a matter of time.
They were eaten by the manatees.
Though the bees were sensationalized by the media, as most everything is, some aspect of their killing nature is true given that they kill 1 or 2 people a year in the US making them more dangerous than venomous snakes but less dangerous than swine flu. I realize this post is trying to point out the problems with media sensationalisation, why did you put acid rain in there? Hopefully you aren’t stating that acid rain is a scam. The ozone hole is well known as well. It grows and recedes dependent on if the pole is pointing towards or away from the Sun and is a well understood process. The chemicals that interact with the ozone layer, such as CFCs or N2O, are also well understood chemical reactions and yes indeed, they do have an effect on the extent of the ozone hole.
Global warming is another one of those things associated with the media that has been sensationalized by many. However one has to look past the sensationalisation and look toward the actual science to see the possible outcomes.
To answer your question, as the world gets warmer the bees will spread northward just as many other creatures adapted to living in a warmer climate are spreading northward, such as the bark beetle, and will begin to inhabit those now warmer areas.
ya know, you ought to try reading. maybe it’ll help.
the ozone hole is over Antarctica (and to a lesser extent the arctic) where there are no killer bees.
There is no evidence that acid rain has any effect on killer bees.
The warming will extend the range that killer bees will be able to inhabit some places that are too cold for them at the moment.
Colony Collapse Disorder keeps "non killer" bees from covering a habitat / area. If CCD is in check in an area, then "killer bees" won’t move in.
Note that an Africanized bee does not lose its stinger when it stings, like a regular honeybee does. So it can sting again and again. Otherwise they look very similar. They may already "bee" in your area, and you don’t know it.
