What effect does food aid have on the environment?
Does it cause environmental degradation in some way?
For example, it allows population to increase, thus putting more strains on the environment, etc?
But other than that – does it lead to environmental degradation?
The cold hard reality is that nearly all food produced for human consumption has a net negative impact on the environment. Whether it is growing crops using pesticides and herbicides, or harvesting the crops using internal combustion engined harvesters, or processing, packaging or transporting the produce, or farming dairy cows which belch methane (a greenhouse gas many times worse than CO2) and pollute waterways, etc. etc.
Yes, we are improving many of these processes, but the jury is out as to whether the environment is winning.
