What do you guys think about BP going Green ?
I think its impossible for British petroleum to go green. They export oil and gas everyday. I read that they are one of the largest oil companies that export more oil than any other oil company. Even though they invest in solar power energy… people do not purchase it. Why is that? also does it have to do with government control?
It’s a marketing scheme. Their will only be as much "going green" as their bean counters will calculate gets them the best return on their marketing investment. Which is why they invest in things like unprofitable alternative energy projects. You see, it has the added benefit that they can deduct the losses from the project *AND* let slip propaganda that alternative energy is a waste of time and is unprofitable.

Solar power is a multi billion dollar business. Many people invest in it worldwide. It is expensive and has a slow payback. Not everyone can afford it.
BP is in the solar industry for a profit. They have a great product and have had for a number of years. It fits well as it is an energy product which the company specializes in.
The real difficult question is what is green. If you use 100 percent of renewable energy to pump and refine oil for sale in the fuel industry are you green?
Some would say no because of the end product.
Some would say yes because the manner in which they produced it.
If you produce organic soap using 100 percent power from a coal fired power plant are you green?

For some it is impossible for them to be green by the nature of their business. With the eco disaster of the century so far BP has allot of bad press and rightfully so. They handled the disaster poorly.

If not for companies like BP, Exxon… etc., you would be reading three-week old news pages from New York City, nailed to a hitching post in your home town of Hooterville.
The very fact that you are able to converse in this forum is because of petroleum companies.
If you are willing to live in the style of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ with a life expectancy of maybe 50-55, then knock yourself out.

No profitable company is going to be greener than it absolutely has to. The government of any country can legislate to encourage companies to become greener.
I agree. It is impossible for BP to go green, Their green and yellow "sunshine" logo is a sick joke!
They are a greedy multinational oil company. Government control? Yes, THEY control many governments, especially in smaller or undeveloped countries, not the other way around. Their profits are larger than many countries GDP’s ! And they provide tax revenue out of the goodness of their hearts!
They should really be taxed heavily, almost out of existence, with punitive carbon taxes. But not even the biggest wealthiest governments would have the guts to do that.
