What do I need to do to start a green club at my school?
My school does not have a lot of funding and we are always trying to do things to raise money. Keeping this in mind I need to know what to do to start a green club I don’t really know what I am doing and pretty much all I know is that i love the environment, I am in 8th grade and i made my house green by getting solar panels and a half gas half electric Prius! Please I REALLY need your help!!!
Start a recycling plan for your school. Your members can help with the logistics of actually collecting the recycling bins from throughout the school and bring it to a central location. Most states offer a 5 cent redemption on carbonated beverages (aluminum soda cans and plastic bottles). Many waste disposal companies may not charge for pre-sorted paper, so diverting paper to recycling will reduce overall trash costs.
Urge your school to think environmentally when making purchasing decisions. For example, buying writing paper with a higher recycled paper content than current, or buying more easily biodegradable lunchroom trays.
If doing a candy sale, look into shade-grown chocolates.
Sponsor a community swap day at the school (basically a large yard sale, but people can bring in just one item rather than a bunch of stuff), to help people re-use or re-purpose items rather than throw them out. You can do this with just your school, too, where students can bring in their old toys that they no longer play with, or received as a gift and don’t like, and swap them with others for something they may want or would like to give to a younger brother/sister. Just make sure that all the stuff goes home with someone and isn’t left for you to throw out afterwards!
Check with local community groups, and see if you can do a collection drive of lightly-used items for them. For example, an animal shelter may want newspapers and old/worn towels and sheets, or a women’s shelter may want lightly used toys.
You can also help to raise awareness at your school. Post short tips in your school’s newspaper/newsletter, or on their website. Put up short explanatory posters throughout the school, and change them out every month or so with new tips. (It is best to put up recycling reminders by the trash, turn off water tips in the bathroom, etc.) Talk to other students about your group, and why you’re doing it. Use facts and reasons that you are doing it, and not just that you think that you’re right and everyone else is wrong.
If you need other ideas, look online for the environmental groups at other schools, and see what they’re doing. Ask those groups how they got started and any tips they can give you for starting a similar group at your school.
you have the interest and it’s a great idea…how about recycling? collecting aluminum cans…selling compost..selling candy in recycled paper…selling vegetable and herb seeds…making green greeting cards…etc good luck!
First of all you need to do some research and find out for yourself the real truth about global warming, not what you hear on tv, school, etc.
