What are some more efficient ways of producing resources that also help maintain the environment?

If humans are going to make it we need more food and materials to meet the demand of an increasing population but we also need to keep the environment stable to survive.

How can we do both? Is it even possible?

  1. A trip to a landfill in any developed country shows that we’re using more than we need. The bulk of future resource partitioning among humans depends on reducing the scale of our current per capita resource use, not increasing production. Other than that, we’ve already put all our eggs in the "technology will save us" basket (genetically modified foods, compact living spaces, alternative energy sources, etc.)

  2. The question you ask it utterly just and the picture of "Che" Guevara as profile picture just makes me laugh a bit : )

    Now back to the question.
Today as you probably know we face severe challenges; over population, that is a scarcity of resources, not to mention our economic crisis situation.
To accomplish a sane, better society for the entire population as well as maintain the environment and keep it substainable we need to think outside the box. Our political systems are corrupt, no argue there, right? Our economy has fallen apart and our religions continue to pollute our society. What we need is a totally new way of thinking where we update our society and norms to present day knowledge with the use of intelligent technology. It is here our true gift lies, in our innovation techniques and problemsolving.
To accomplish a society you propose we would most likely have to see a fasing out of our present monetary economics and instead fix our eyes apon the important parts of our lives that is the real rescources and technology. With a global integrated system of technology and use of the scientific meta method of solving problems we can create a sane substainable society because we would now find all so called "decisions" evident to us because our method of analysis would always involve the carrying capacity of the earth, peoples efficient well being and logic.

Many tend to see such a world as impossible and utopian but this is not the case. We have many advanced mediums of technology today and just to name one example: During the time of the Wright Brothers, many engineers at the time wrote books on "Why we can’t fly". Obviously the Wrights’ didn’t read these books.

  3. harvest rainwater to use for irrigation, flushing toilets, etc. (water)

make compost to enrich earth (soil)

use scrubbers to have zero emissions (air)

harvest wood products from sustainable forests (shelter)

turn lawns into gardens, make vertical gardens in urbanized areas (food)

did I miss any essential needs?

  4. i say, use hemp for textiles (clothing, fabrics, etc.).
