How do I recycle my used home computers?

Posted in Green Q&A | 5 comments

Hi I have about 5 old computer systems, 5 monitors, keyboards, mice and cords. I’ve heard it is not good to throw them in the trash and would like to know how I can dispose of them. I’ve heard there are recyclers. I live in Illinois in a Chicago suburb of DuPage County. I would like to drop this stuff off somewhere, and get rid of it for FREE or as cheaply as possible. Any advice? Thanks all
These computers are complete garbage, half the stuff is missing or not working, some of the monitors work some don’t. I just want to unload them quick, I don’t have time to sell or ship etc..

I’m a student council member and we just started a new committee called Trash. We are currently brainstorming projects for the committee and we kinda need alittle help. Any suggestions would be welcome.

What is a "green" way of disposing of cigarette butts?

Posted in Green Q&A | 13 comments

I ask because outside my work, co-workers have literally destroyed our back lot by chucking their leftovers on the ground. I finally got irritated and put an old coffee can out there, which majority of them are using, but I’d like to know how I can dispose of them in a way that I’m not just moving the trash from one place to another without actually helping. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Is it illegal to throw a banana peel out the window of a car?

Posted in Green Q&A | 11 comments

I usually don’t throw garbage out the window of a car but banana peels are the one exception I’ve made in the past… Someone had convinced me that it was ok since they are biodegradable but now that I think about it, a lot of things are biodegradable…

So, I’m guessing the answer is yes but I’d just like to verify…

Throwing banana peels out the window of a car, on the ground, or someplace public other than a trash can is littering, correct?

How can we recycle paper at the office where I work?

Posted in Green Q&A | 15 comments

I work in an accounting office and as you can imagine, 98% of our trash is all paper. There are several other offices in the area where ours is located so I would have assumed there would be some of kind of recycling bin… but there isn’t. Is this something I would have to bring up with the management of the building so we could begin getting these services? I live in San Diego (Southern California). Any kind of direction would help.
I should have mention we shred everything. While I love the idea of using both sides or saving paper for note-pads, the information we have is high-sensitive material and almost 100% of the time needs to be shredded.
