Solar Introduction 101 and Solar Tour

Introduction to solar space heating and solar water heating with a DIY solar hot water collector and a solar hot air collector. These solar panels are easy to build and provide lots of free, environmentally friendly heat! I also include a segment on our solar thermal storage tank and how I preheat our domestic hot water and store heat for our under floor radiant heating system and winter space heating.

  1. Hi, typical payback is around 2 years for the? air systems and 3 to 4 years for the hydronic (liquid / water) systems. They should last decades, so either way, your investment will pay you back many times over. That said, the money savings isn’t the best reason to do solar. The best reason of all is that this is all really, really interesting and fun!

  2. How long did it take to get 100% payback on the investment? Once that is reached it’s all bonus savings! It seems this would pay off in? a few years. I love the concept of getting back at my electric company.

  3. @solarguyable Hi, regarding the copper in the solar thermal storage tank, I just used about 75 feet – what I happened to have on hand. Regarding doubling the pex rows, yes,? I think that would not only collect more heat directly, but by feeding in parallel, resistance would be reduced and my total flow would increase, so that would help in two ways. You sound like you would enjoy our SimplySolar e-mail group. We would love to have you join us!

  4. @GScottVideos awesome! How did you figure out how much copper line you would need for your heat? storage/transfer tank? Also, would you have better efficiency if you doubled the amount rows of pex in the panel? Thanks!

  5. @solarguyable I use a mixture of water and environmentally friendly glycol so that the? fluid never freezes.

  6. Great System! How do you? keep the water lines from bursting when the outside temp gets below freezing?

  7. @raidnuker Hi,

I used EPDM pond liner to line the thermal storage tank.? It is good to something like 200F and should last a LONG time.

  8. hello great system looks impressive, i was wondering what? you used to line the inside of your hot water tank?

  9. @TouchOfGreatness Thanks? for your kind words!

  10. Thanks for the video and sharing this information. I look forward to constructing one of these myself. Your video was? very inspiring.

  11. Bravo.?

  12. @dictaham Thanks, the aluminum downspout hot air collector is entering its third winter and it has worked really well so far. I have efficiency numbers on the hot air link at n3fjp.com/solar/. Also on the same page, you’ll see a similar? but even better design that another Scott, Scott S, built after seeing mine. He has excellent efficiency numbers with his and I have all that info at the bottom of the page.

  13. Very good Scott you did a nice job. I have had Passive (hot water) solar for about 25 years. only in the last 2 years have I added PV. We generate enough power that our power bills are 0, no KW used during the billing cycle. I like the Idea of? your Hot air exchanger I will have to look into that. Let us know how the system works through the winter. 73 kd6vum

  14. @MrMhoskote The large, 24′ X 8′ collector took parts of four weekends? to build (roughly). The cost for the collector itself was just under a thousand,? but could have been done for less.

  15. I have lots more details on the construction and costs of the 24′ X? 8′ collector here:

    n3fjp.com/solar/BigProject/BigProject.htm

  16. Very nice video presentation.? Some info on costs (such as $/sq.ft) and time it took to build will be useful.

Great job on? the collector array and on the video. Keep them comming.

  18. Looks like it works? great thanks for the video.TAKE CARE

  19. @IGotStanima
Heej, for as far as I know there will be some new designs shortly (step-up? time, well let’s say couple of months) So I guess you just have to hold on for a little longer and then buy your ass of. Or of course you could search Ebay or something

  20. @IGotStanima I would? want to know this too..

  21. Where do I? buy the clothes????? The website has nowhere to do that

  22. @Anyaaxxx The magic of online payment means you can pay? with euros : )

  23. on the website, theres the europe store and the rest of the world store, but how do you get the uk store?? its either in euros or dollars, i cant find pounds… its probably just me being stupid but can someone let me know?? i want a t shirt, if its good enough for Rou its good enough for me and i really respect your views and ideas :) and btw Rou, if you read this Enter Shikari are my favourite band by far and the? night i saw you was the best night of my life, keep making awesome music! <3 xx

  24. damn, you need new designs and products!? my 4 t’s are NOT enough! i want hoodies, shirts and jeans! :D

  25. just? watched V for vendetta today, what a coincidence :D

  26. My friend said this? was bull…. he is no longer my friend.

  27. @STEPUPHQ Wow guys you’ve really opened my mind hear and made? me think.

  28. @fuckshitupwith666 on each of the tops on the website it says how much of the money from? the top goes to charity. it also has links to the charities websites. all tops have 50% going to charity

  29. Rou? you god..

  30. @TheCallum3794 as britain belongs to europe, your question is invalid.?

  31. we need to fucking? step-up :D !

  32. Is Rou the one? talking? LOL

  33. @STEPUPHQ Does your profit go to charity or such? places?

  34. can someone tell me if I’m in britain do i use? the europe store or the rest of the world store ? i know I’m an idiot

  35. lol? “on your dogs life” haha on another note loving the clothes btw

  36. When can we expect more? videos?

  37. Seeing as? this is a non-profit label… Tell me… how much does it cost to produce each t shirt?

  38. I LOVE this. I ordered the Step Up tee yesterday. I can’t even explain how? stocked I am that there is a company like this :)

  39. Sorry to sound downbeat, on the plus side I really hope Step? Up HQ can play a part in a shift in thinking, and other people who can will do similar things. After all, it would be lovely if progressiveness and striving for equality could become mainstream thinking at some point.

  40. I absolutely love it. Although this itself has made me feel depressed; to start a not for profit label like this with the appeal of clothing rather than just fliers, meetings and protests, you need to have money in the first place, which of course has been provided by the success of Enter Shikari.
The other 9 times out of 10, people without money are trodden down by education, the media and gvt hammering into us that profit is what we should live for, and become another cog? in the machine.

  41. sounds good!?

  42. @cradleoffilth6664 mine arrived to day
