It is possible, but it may not be common in your area. Styrofoam (aka polystyrene) usually isn’t accepted by curbside recycling programs & even if it is, they may not take styrofoam contaminated by food. Best bet is to contact your local waste management utility. You can also search at http://earth911.com/ to find places in your community to take styrofoam to for recycling.

Yes, but it’s more defensible to drink hot beverages out of mugs — even when you factor in the cost of manufacturing the more permanent vessels. The reason is that you can re-use a coffee mug by washing it up.
Re-using is a better energy strategy than re-cycling.

My father-in-law used to take an empty 1 gal metal paint bucket, half fill it with lacquer thinner (WARNING: it is VERY volatile) and break up the styrofoam into pieces which he stuffed into the bucket. They instantly dissolved with little increase in volume of the bucket’s contents. It took a very large amount of the styrofoam. It gradually turned into a syrup. He made vases out of gourds and painted the inside with the syrup, making the vases waterproof. It is messy and hard to clean off hands and brushes, but it worked.
Do this in a well ventilated area, away from any open flame.

Don’t use it on containers that will hold food.
Go here: http://search.earth911.com/?what=Styrofoam&where=California&latitude=&longitude=&country=&province=&city=
it’ll show you where you can recycle it near you. Type in your city. Packing peanuts can be recycled at UPS stores among other places.
