In the case of the real start-up sorts of companies, be prepared to work for deferred compensation, that is stock, or maybe simply delayed payment of your salary while the company grows. Some old geeks who worked for APPLE when they where first getting started are VERY well off right now because of the compensation in stock that they received early on. Keep trying
