I am hoping to change my career and turn my passion for wildlife/conservation in to a career?
I’m new to all this.. Any suggestions, word of advice, things I need to know before or during course of this change…I am extremely passionate about this and have been trying to source maximum information before I decide to move away from my Insurance profession.
I suggest volunteering somewhere first to see if you really would want to do conservation 24/7 before changing professions. You should not have a problem finding a job though because Environmental work is really popular right now.
Have you heard of Blue Thumb, they are an organization that monitors streams. You just go to the training and then get to monitor your own stream, it alot of fun, great experience, and looks great on your resume…you might look into it.
Also SCA has great internship opportunities, I don’t know how old you are but if your under 35 I think, it is super fun, you get to hike around and learn so much.
Hope that helps!
FYI: I’m an environmental scientist
I suggest you actually talk to people in that line of work. I also suggest you check into the education you might need to be able to compete for jobs in that sort of thing.
You would need to earn a degree..at least a Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate major. Also, you would need hands-on experience as well…it is a MUST in this field. You would want to do some volunteer work, internships or seasonal work while still in school and immediately after you graduate to make yourself more marketable. Getting involved in research with a professor on campus is also suggested.
