How to start a career in wildlife conservation?

My friend really wants to work in nature/wildlife conservation but doesn’t know where to start. We have looked everywhere for trainee vacancies but there do not seem to be many opportunities where we live in North East England (Newcastle-upon-Tyne). He has excellent GCSE’s and a lot of work experience in customer service. Can anyone give me some tips as to where to look for courses, training or vacancies. I know Northumberland College do adult apprenticeships (he is 23) but not in this subject area.

Thanks in advance for your help. xxx

  1. Try this, he might not get a job but will meet similarly minded people who will be able to advise.

  2. He he wants to work in this field then he needs to go to college and earn a degree with a major in wildlife biology, wildlife management, zoology, biology, environmental science, or similar. He is not just going to be able to take some training course and have a career, he needs a degree AND experience. He would need a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree which takes 4 years. I would suggest he look into any volunteer and internship opportunities in this field. Not sure what government agencies are in charge of wildlife in England (we have US Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Fish and Game here in the states) but he should talk to them about internship opportunities. Sorry, but customer service is not going to help much for this field.
