    GreenieM is exactly backwards (as you probably already know this). High latitudes and high elevations are among the first to be affected and suffer the most drastic changes.

    The first thing to understand is mitigation means reducing impacts, not stopping them. The general concept is species at lower elevations will move higher. They will replace those species at higher elevations. Species at the highest elevations will stay at the highest elevation, but move further northward. This happens naturally, but because of the speed with which climate change occurs, the process can be helped along through forest management (i.e. planting trees and controlling competition until the trees are established).

    Most mountain ecosystems have a dry side (south facing areas – lots of sun), and moist sites (cove areas – north facing that get only limited sun). In addition, rain will dump on the west side of large coastal mtns. as the rising air cools. The leeward side may be in a rain shadow and much drier. Species will also migrate to match precipitation regime, not just temperature. The 2 are linked. The greater the temperature, the more rain is needed typically (or the greater the solar intensity the more water needed for photosynthesis.

    Climate change does not effect one area or one single Eco system.

    Secondly higher altitudes haven’t seen much climate change anyways.

    According to IPCC models, climate change should have 1.3 times more effect on higher attitudes, which has not been seen. Thus it means either there is no climate change or and the models are wrong.

    And being Indian (which I take from your name you are) there is nothing worse you can do for your country than to support the idea of climate change.

  3. Virtually all mountain systems have seen increased glacier melt, which is causing increased runoff of glacier streams (until the glacier melts completely). This is causing and will continue to have effects and is easily verified.

    In heavily populated areas like northern India and Tibet which rely on these waters, increased dams at high elevations might be needed to reduce the swings of water availability. California and the western mountain states (Colorado, Utah) depend on winter snows to restock their dams used for water supplies during the summer, but lately it’s falling more as rain, overfilling the dams in winter/spring, and drying out in the summer (I think last winter was good finally, but the Hoover Dam is still down). People need to change their habits or increase the water storage.

    Also wildlife populations in mountainous areas tend to go up mountains in warmer weather and down in cooler weather. If the weather patterns change, these animals (like big horn sheep) may get isolated on particular mountains and not be able to move about and interbreed, so having safe green corridors that they can use in critical parts of their seasons (unfenced in the winter) have an increased value.

    I saw a program on the discovery channel I believe where they tested putting white blankets on a Greenland glacier to test the effect of slowing the melting of a glacier. They put it over two acres, and the surrounding area melted two feet more than this area over a couple months. They translated this into how many thousands of gallons of water, and it was impressive. It would be ludicrous to do this for all of Greenland, but they did mention possibly doing this in an area that depends on meltwater for their crops and drinking water. But it wouldn’t be cheap I’m sure.

    The more you try to change things the more nothing happens.

    Climate change is just natural, I do not understand why so many people who claim to love nature, can not accept it for what it is.

  6. The SUN is responsible for our weather and our Temperatures. The solar cycle which you can look up has HOTTER periods when SUN SPOTS are plentiful and then cycles into a COOLER period with fewer SUN SPOTS which started in 2008 and will last till 2030. Why the sudden change of name from Global Warming to Climate Change? Because the lie they rode all this years is over. Record cold June/July in Chicago, Nashville and across the country. Why? Because CO2 which is .0035 of 1% of our atmosphere has not and is not increasing our temperature. The sun did it. 1998 was the peak of SUN SPOT activity and Peak hot year and we have gone down hill. 2007/2008 the SUN SPOTS STOPPED as they were predicted to do following the cycle observed for hundreds of years. Now the SUN SPOTS did not return when expected and returned in fewer then expected numbers meaning an even cooler COOL cycle of the SUN. Don’t believe me or the record ice in the Arctic last winter. Then go see Piers Corbyn who has for 25 years accurately predicted MAJOR weather events up to a year in advance using the true source of our weather the SUN. The lie is over and the truth is coming out. The truth is out and you need to stop listening to this junk science based on computer models that can’t even get today’s temps right using historical data and have been proven wrong on ice thickness by scientific trips to the arctic and antarctic.

  7. Depending on the mountain in question, it would be best to either raise it a few hundred feet in elevation or move it towards the poles a ways, to restore the cold temperatures you seek.
