Alternative fuel for cars is already a reality. We call the fuel for diesel cars "biodiesel" and the fuel for gasoline engines "ethanol." A couple weeks ago, iTunes had a free download from the Discovery Channel on alternative fuels.

Do you mean how soon will it be before alternative fuels for cars EVERYWHERE are a reality? That question is still being debated. In my opinion, we won't reach this until the government finds that there is not enough fuel to meet the demand. Why? Because as much as the government hates using foreign fuel, it is keeping us tied to foreign nations and promoting peace... somewhat.

However, there are places selling alternative fuels, especially biodiesel. In fact, country star Willie Nelson has his own brand of biodiesel called BioWillie. Try Yahoo!ing that one!

Hope I could help... somewhat.

It is a reality! I curently have a car the runs on bio deisel gas here is how this miricle is made.
You take cooking oil left over from frying food, it is then out through a system of pipes, until it is refiened. Then the fuel is ready to be used a a fuel for your car. It is a great source of renewable energy and Biodiesel costs as little as $.70 per gallon! COmpared to the $3.00 we currently pay for gas here is the US! I hope you will look further into this amazing alternative fuel to put into your life.

Six months if you have the acreage. One acre of switchgrass can produce 1200 gallons of ethanol.

LPG!
Now!

LPG is everywhere right now. Look at your local gas station. Roush and Ford have a dedicated LPG F-150 line available now. Fuel is cheap, 85% from US, can turn Ethanol into Bio-LPG. LPG is better for local air pollution then any other Alt-fuel readily available. We in the US need to take the follow of Australia, Germany, and GB and make LPG a true driving force in cleaning up America’s Cities. Remember, Fork Lifts are running LPG indoors.

It already is. There are plenty of cars already on the road that will run on 85% ethanol (E85), which is produced from plants.

Below are two websites on E85 and E85 vehicles.

http://www.e85fuel.com
http://www.livegreengoyellow.com

The website below lists new and used GM models that will run on E85. They have models as far back as 2000 models that will run on it.

http://www.gm.com/company/onlygm/livegreengoyellow/index.html?directEntry=e85vehicles

I have been filling my 2001 Chevy S-10 up with E-85 for a year or so now. The distribution networks for filling up with E85 are just now becoming widely available across the entire US. The first website I listed is very good for locating stations in your area that sell or will be selling E85 soon.

There is a vast amount of alternative energy that is freely available to all of us right now. It's called conservation. Slow down. Learn to drive more efficiently and intelligently. Pump up your tires. Learn to drive a standard shift. I personally get a minimum of 45% above EPA ratings on my totally unmodified car. Imagine what would happen to the world if everyone did that?

Tune the thing up and make other modifications to bump up its fuel efficiency, like make a grill block and use an engine block heater. Learn what others are doing. Lots of people are getting over 85% above what the EPA says they should be getting out of their cars. Don't wait for some grandiose invention to start making improvements today.
