How can I better recycle my garbage?

Right now, newspapers get burned and cans get recycled but everything else goes in the garbage.
Is there a better way to split up things and where can I recycle glass, plastic ect?
Do all recyclable items have the recyclable sign on them, or just most of them?

  1. Newspaper is recyclable as is all clean paper. Check your local officials for more detailed information for your specific area. Burning your old newspapers is not such a good idea. Think of ways to to reuse that paper before sending it off to be recycled. A few ideas are: gift wrap; packing material for fragile items; add it to your compost pile; if you don’t have a compost pile, offer it to someone who does; add it to the produce drawers of your fridge to absorb messes and odors.

Other examples of clean paper would include wrapping paper, old mail (for privacy protection be sure to shred it first), cereal boxes, tissue boxes, soda and cereal boxes and magazines.

Speaking of magazines, consider subscription sharing with others, so they get more than one use, or donate them to a local library, shelter or non-profit organization for their lobby areas.

Ocassionally, I will find myself at the store without my reusable grocery bags. Instead of throwing the plastic bags away when I get home, I use them as liners for several small wastebaskets we have around the house. I also know a lady who uses them to stuff pillows she makes.

A good mindset to take on is to reduce your consumption and your trash automatically reduces. For example, buy a 2 liter of soda, rather than six bottles. Purchase items that have less packaging.

  2. why are you burning newspapers…your poluting the air.

Newspapers can be recycled to make other paper products.

You can check out your city’s webpage for recycling systems and plans in your area.

  3. everything we have is mostly recyclable now…like he shampoo bottles and oil, ketchup, mayonnaise , peanut butter and jelly jars…is recyclable …Im sure your area has a recycling center where you could drop off this things it just takes time and effort…

  4. first watch waste on planet earth channel they actually show in the very beginning how to seperate the trash and recycable thing
and just want planet earth channel they have a bunch of shows on it.

not all item have the sign like newspapers and some recyclable items. read green book like gorgous green and living in a green world. they have list of recyclable things. also check websites.

  5. If your town does not have a recycling center you may have to drive your recyclables to the next town over. Make sure that they can take the kinds you want to recycle. Some smaller centers can only recycle one or two types of plastic and glass. If the recycling center or county has a website they will often tell you what they can take. Beware: some things (like newspaper) actually produce more sludge and pollution to recycle than they do to re-use or throw away. Clean out all your cans and bottles and remove labels and caps before you recycle. This will help the workers at the plant and will keep recycling cheap.

If the item does not have a place to be recycled, think about ways to re-use it or replace the item with something similar that you can recycle. You can turn old glass bottles into drinking glasses by cutting the tops off and melting the rim to make it smooth – ask someone who works with glass to do this for you. You can turn pop bottles into science fair projects or cut them apart to make miniature greenhouses for plants. Paper products can become shelf liners, wrapping paper, easter grass (just put colored flyers through a shredder for re-usable, recyclable easter grass – no more cheap plastic strings!), drop cloths (tape sheets of old newspaper together to catch paint drips under kids’ projects or to protect furniture), and even craft projects (paper mache, paper flowers, greeting cards, wrapping paper and decoupage).

Be creative with your trash and consider what you will do with the trash before you pick an item off the shelf, and you’ll soon find you have far less to toss out!

  6. That really depends on what services you have available to you. Where in live we simply put all recyclable items into the same bin and they are separated at the recycling center.

Most things can be recycled. So if you have a general recycling bin drop your recyacbles in there.

Heres a list of what can be recycled:

Of course that varies from country to country but general its probably the same or at least similar. Contact your local counsel or recycling company to find out more.
