Do you think the bad effects of climate change have been exaggerated?
They always said if the polar ice caps melt, areas like the Maldives, Bangladesh and Holland will be flooded.
However, did anyone notice that, if you put some ice into a cup and fill it with water to the brim, when the ice melts completely, the water does not overflow? Polar ice caps already displace the same volume of water they will be if they all melted. There will be no flooding and the islands will not be drowned. What kind of science does climate change promote?
The only exaggeration is in the time scales involved.
And you show the normal denier lack of knowledge on the mechanisms.
YES, if ice in a cup melts it doesn’t mean the liquid level rises
BUT
Most of the ice that will melt is not sea ice, it is land based glaciers.
A more accurate analogy would be to have the cup of water set into a block of ice, with the brim of the cup below the top of the block.
Ice below the brim is the sea ice, and won’t raise the level in the cup when it melts, that above the brim is the glaciers, which will melt into the cup, and make it overflow.
Infact. It does Overflow. Just thing 1 ice cap in a full ocean? try putting in about 3 or 4 then your will see the results. And also, it’s not just the flooding. It’s the pengins and polar bears that will die, the pengins have noowhere to rest and also nowhere to hide or breed if the ice melts, and the polar bears wont be able to rest. And as your saying the ice will replace the water. It dosen’t work like that unfortunatly. Those ice caps have been frozen for thousands of years when there was alot more water. and now that they’re melting the oceans are going to rise.
Sigh.
1) As land ice melts, the water will flow into the ocean and the levels will rise. Did you ever notice that if you fill a glass to the brim and then put more water in it will overflow?
2) As the oceans warm they will expand. Did you ever notice that water expands as it heats? Well it does.
3) As the ice caps melt, the portion of white surface that they provide will be reduced and replaced by darker colored water. The white ice reflects heat away from the surface whereas the dark colored water absorbs heat. Did you ever notice that dark clothing makes you much hotter on a hot day?
Melting sea ice will not raise the level of the ocean. It is an indicator, not the cause, of the problem.
When you look at a map of the world, ask yourself where the ice caps are.
In the seventies scientists were claiming that we were headed towards an ice age. Millions of dollars in Government grants were issued to researchers and other groups whose livelihood depends on such things. Now it is an easy thing to pass over to the public that man is influencing global warming and other world wide things. Although this is been proved to be true, environmental concerns in a good many cases are over exaggerated, and they are a sure fire way for ALOT of people to make money, get a free ride to travel the world, use TECHNOLOGY and equipment they could never afford themselves while making a very comfortable living and a lovely little retirement nest egg in the process. There is exploitation in environmental issues just like everything else. The only difference is that we are not allowed to disagree with environmentalists. Whatever they say is taken as Gospel and is trusted and if you disagree then you are labeled as an enemy to the environment. I say BULL S – - – !! Use your own money not mine. And remember the context of the question here. He is not asking if climate change is non-existent but rather is it EXAGGERATED. Remember, where money is involved the truth will rarely show itself.
Not at all actually, i live on a coastal country and all ready some of the effects which were suppose to happen much later are happening such as rainfall like the monsoon in the winter season and frequent cyclones.
all the bad horrible things that are said will happen are going to happen, but over a long period of time. when they say that the oceans are going to flood over, that could take more than 50 years. the problems with global warming are to prepare us
OK, to be clear, what you’re saying may be generally true at the North Pole where the ice is floating on water, but don’t forget that, at the South Pole, the ice is on the continent of Antarctica, and if the ice melts there, it *will* raise sea levels significantly.
However, having said that, the ice over the vast majority of Antarctica is *not* melting. In fact, the ice around Antarctica reached a record high in 2007. I bet you didn’t hear about that, did you? Why is that, do you think?
The truth is that the estimates of sea level rise, made by the IPCC, have been reducing with each report; the 2001 report said three feet by the end of the century. The latest report says less than two. Some scientists are saying sea level will rise about 8 inches in the 21st century.
The average rise in sea level over the past 10,000 years was 4 feet/century. During the 20th century it was 8 inches. It has been rising at just 1 ft/century since 1993 and in the past three years, sea level has hardly risen at all.
Al Gore, in his film “An Inconvenient Truth”, predicted 20ft of sea-level rise by the end of the century, but Mr. Justice Burton, in the UK High Court, stated that: “The Armageddon scenario that he depicts is not based on any scientific view.” Yet Global Warming Alarmists still recommend Gore’s film as “Getting the basic science right”! Hmmm.
So, in short, sea level rise is just another example of the lies and exaggerations of the Global Warming Alarmists, in an effort to scare everyone onto the Global Warming bandwagon.
As ever with global warming – don’t believe the hype.
"Few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear."
— PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA, NOVEMBER 19 , 2008
With all due respect Mr. President, that is not true.
We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now.1,2 After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events.3 The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior.4 Mr. President, your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect.

The water in the glass stays put because of surface tension. Actually melted ice (water) is denser than solid ice. That’s a fact and it’s why ice floats.
Next, the ice on the polar ice caps is not all in the water. Some of it is on land – Antarctica.
Your "science" is faulty.
come to asutralia and u will see it at its worse, eg fires floods snow
