Climate Change, What It Is And Why It Is Happening

The reality is, although some 90 percent of us now know what climate change is, only a miserly 8 per cent of us are prepared to do anything about it

The truth is however, that if we continue on our current path, and ignore the danger signals we risk losing everything! For man is living out of step with the world

What we need to recognize is, that everything we do has consequences, yet in this super fast, 24/7 instant economy, where time has become our most valuable asset we have, on the whole, become ‘complacent’.

We know that climate change refers to the gradual warming of the earths temperature, caused by the burning of fossils fuels, yet in order for us to secure a reversal of trend, we cannot just cite climate change in terms of the frequency of adverse weather, the rate of emissions or the amount of energy we use and moreover waste without recognizing that all of these things when combined, create what we now term global warming.

In a matter of decades we have managed to wreak havoc upon much of the planet. The corporation has for too long put profit over the lives and livelihoods of people and the giants of industry have systematically destroyed many of the worlds richest habitats. Everywhere we look we are faced with the after effects of mans frenetic growth, and now the four seasons that we once could depend upon have turned against us, animals that once whiled away the long winter months in hibernation have stopped and millions of people will die as a direct result of our wasteful ways.

We cannot ‘banish’ the supermarket from our towns and cities, nor can we ban the car or be expected to knit our own pasta but we can, as consumers make a difference.

From fashion, to food and from coffee to paper, understanding that what we buy, has a direct effect on the future of our planet will enable us, as consumers to make informed choices.

Governments, the corporation, the media and marketing gurus will be required to adopt and implement greater levels of corporate social responsibility throughout the entire supply chain and deliver goods and services within economic, social and environmental guidelines.

We are not talking about imposing a paradigm shift in the way we live our lives, but we are talking about a shift in social conscience, which will enable us to live a better life where we understand the direct relationship between globalization, our shopping habits and the effects that this consumerism has had upon the world only then will we manage to secure a future not just for mankind but for all of civilization.
