As a consumer, what does buying a "green" or "eco friendly" product mean to you?
Do you purchase products that claim to be green or environmentally friendly over those that aren’t? If so, how do you know they are actually better for the environment? Do you look at the labels for ingredients, certifications, etc?
I prefer to buy things green or eco friendly and things I consider when purchasing are…
-is the packaging recyclable
-are the ingredients organic, no MSG and unnecessary preservatives (ie-apple sauce- the ingredients should be -apples) –also no artificial sweeteners
-i look for local produce and products
-we buy green house cleaning products that are better for air quality and not in are-sol cans
-i like reusable items (including washable menstrual pads, tampons and diapers), our toilet paper is biodegradable
It means more and more to me everyday. I am more of aware of manufactures who green wash. I can verify such things through education, looking at what is used to build a product, is it sustainable, verifiable, does it carry any 3rd party verification.
Paying extra for fashion… it has nothing to do with the abstract concept of the environment.
paying extra for crap
Usually means you’re being ripped off.
It means they had a lot of green dye they had to do something with. So they dumped into the regular product and charged a lot extra. I guess the green dye was eco-friendly. Cause the rest was the same as what I regularly bought except for the color and the price. Oh and the advertising claims.
While I agree the green wash is to be avoided so sick of the backlash by lazy people using green washing as a reason they are not being eco friendly they are as transparent as my nephew when he always finds something that the waitress does wrong when we dine out so that he can stiff her on the tip.
Anyway to me it is buying items in bulk when possible this cuts down on packaging, trying to stay away from single use products by buying quality items that per use save money, and planning shopping trips on the way home from somewhere else to avoid making special trips. The biggest thing to me is to analyze lifecycle costs of things I buy so that I don’t just take into account cost anytime you do this it guides you away from the disposable product lifestyle that has become so common with very little examination this is shown to be horrible for the wallet and the world.
