Are people eating less shark due to environmental/conservation concerns, or because there are less sharks?
It’s been about 2 years since my local supermarket sold shark…I’ve never really cared to eat shark, but is the reason likely due to conservation efforts, or the unfortunate fact, that there has not been sustainable conservation,, so there are two few sharks to fish commercially?
If you assuming this based on your local area, then you are woefully wrong.
Fact is there are lots of people eat sharks especially in China and Japan. Maybe less people eat sharks in your local area, but that doesn’t apply in another countries.
Lots of sharks hunted and killed everyday and yes there’s a big chance that sharks in the future to face their extinction. The extinction of sharks will lead to another problem with the balance of water ecosystem. Obviously, only few people seems to care about this.
I think it’s more likely that your local supermarket just stopped carrying the product because they weren’t making enough money off of it in an economy where many people can’t afford to buy shark. The only real way to find out would be to ask someone at the supermarket.
Shark is still widely available in most places in the U.S. and worldwide, and I haven’t heard or read anything recently that mentioned that either harvesting effort or catch tonnage has changed. Perhaps their source of shark was a fishery in the Gulf of Mexico and they’re having trouble finding another?
