Just yakking off the top of my head, it seems to me there are two species of penguins that are particularly good examples of adaptation to climate change-one forages for food best on ice, the other, on open water. And the one species is dramatically declining in population, where the other, I think, is showing something like a 400% increase in population.
So by comparing the two types of penguins the adaptations would be clear…but they apparently have already been made, it is just that the ecological balance is being tipped in a way that favors one over the other.
Perhaps someone else is inclined to Google penguins and uncover the details, but I have to do some other stuff today.
There are penguins that live at the Galapagos islands near the equator. The water is cold but not as cold as the Antarctic would be no matter what the climate did. It would take thousands of years and far more warming than we will ever rationally get to melt a significant percentage those glaciers. It is viturally impossible for the ocean around antarctic to warm to the point that penquins would have to physically evolve. Some might change their strategy of mating way many miles inland on the ice. They wouldn’t have to huddle together as much. It would do little to harm any penguins and they probably would expand dramatically in numbers as more coast opened up for colonies. That would have to be thousands of years in the future an it is extremely unlikely to ever occur. Most of Antarctica has been cooling.
They wouldn’t have to work so hard to eat and take care of their babies, so they’d probably breed like mad.
