I don’t get how it saves the environment. The only thing it saves is money.

There certainly has been a lot in the newspaper and on TV about global warming. In fact, there has been more information on global warming than there ever was on Y2K, which if you’ll recall was to be the calamity of all calamities caused by mankind. There were almost as many articles on Y2K in the media as during the Cold War; you remember that of course we were all supposed to die by nuclear holocaust during an exchange of nuclear weapons with Russia.

Perhaps it is time that we get the facts straight about global warming. The global warming alarmist will have you believe that the Earth is heating up and yet what you might not realize is that the world set a global cool weather record in 2007. In fact, 2007 was the coolest in the last 16 years. What does this mean? Is global warming over or did it never really exist? Does the Earth really go through climate fluctuations and cycles and there is really nothing that mankind can do about it?

Or are humans and their activities such as the emissions of CO2 really causing our climate to heat up enough to melt all the ice caps and flood every human civilization that is less than 30 feet above sea level? Isn’t it time that humans stop believing everything they see in the media or hear on TV and start looking at the facts, which by the way are not docudramas meant to scare you and make Hollywood millions of dollars on movies. Something to contemplate in 2008.

There aren’t many things more comforting than the feeling of warmth that comes from a wood fire. But in order to experience that warmth someone had to cut up a tree to make the firewood. Is burning wood damaging to the environment or could it actually be good for the environment?

It all depends on whether or not the trees are responsibly harvested. If forests are being cleared to produce firewood and not being properly reforested then burning firewood can be damaging to the environment.

In most cases forests are not being destroyed to make firewood. A lot of the time when trees are cut into firewood they are replaced by new trees or existing trees that were once too crowded. When responsibly harvested firewood can be a renewable source of energy. With modern forestry practices firewood often comes from poorly formed, dead or unhealthy trees that are removed to allow the remaining trees to grow better.

When harvested responsibly burning firewood can be a natural part of the carbon cycle and does not create a net increase in greenhouse gases the way fossil fuels do. When a tree is burned the trees that replace it absorb the CO2 from the atmosphere.

Firewood is also often produced as a byproduct from producing other forest products. When harvesting trees for making lumber there is typically a lot of wood in the forest that is not suitable for making lumber. This wood would be left in the forest to rot and go to waste. But when used for firewood this material can be burned to produce heat instead of using fossil fuels or some other non renewable source of energy.

If you want to use firewood to heat your home and are concerned about the environmental impacts, just make sure your wood comes from a responsibly harvested and sustainable source. You can then enjoy your fire and the peace of mind from knowing you are doing good things for the environment.

Climate change is both a development and environmental issue. A global consensus is emerging that climate change is an issue that cannot wait and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Today there is a double challenge: how to reduce damaging carbon emissions and still meet the energy demands of the world’s poor. The World Bank focuses on the additional economic and social opportunities that a low carbon path creates.

Countries trying to escape from poverty should not be penalized for the consequences of fossil fuel dependent growth patterns in the rich countries. Their development aspirations should be at the center.

A global regulatory framework, which would provide the necessary financial flows to developing countries, is needed. This framework should match the long-term need for energy for development with the necessary technical innovation and financial incentives to move consistently towards a low carbon economy.

The Poor Are Disproportionately Affected

Developing countries are more vulnerable to climate change than rich countries, with poor people being the most at risk from the increased impacts of volatility in weather patterns (i.e., floods and droughts). Human-induced climate change is expected to negatively impact agricultural productivity throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, decrease water quantity and quality in most arid and semi-arid regions, increase the incidence of malaria, dengue and other vector borne diseases in the tropics and sub-tropics, and harm ecological systems and their biodiversity. In addition, the sea level rise associated with expected increases in temperature could displace tens of millions of people living in low-lying areas, such as the Ganges and the Nile deltas, and could threaten the very existence of small island states.

Many companies that recycle old electronics are not truthful. They export it to China, and other foreign countries. There, it is not recycled, and mostly burned. Where can I recycle old electronics, and know that 100% of it is being recycled.
