It is no surprise that many people are really starting to care about the environment and planet as a whole. Regardless of what we want to believe in the media the consensus is that we need to make some changes in our lifestyles if we want to preserve the well being of our earth. Below are some helpful tips on how you can put your two cents in and help.

1. Eat more Local Organic: Large corporate farms add to the overall destruction of our planet. Many rainforests are leveled in order to raise beef and cattle. Try reaching out to your local farmers and get some of your groceries locally from a homegrown source.

2. Reuse Plastics and Packaging: Throwing away plastic wrappings ads greatly to the amount of landfill toxins that seep into our soil every year. Whenever possible if you use plastic bags try reusing them for something else. If you take a look around your home you will most likely uncover a new possible way to reuse the bag.

3. Use Organic Cleaners: Organic cleaners have almost zero pollutants and are much better for not just the environment but also you and your family. Think about your pets which walk across the floor then lick their paws. Organic cleaners are better to use at any given moment.

4. Conserve Water: Take a look at all your toilets and faucets in the house. If any toilets run much longer than they should adjust them so they are a bit more efficient. If you have a faucet or sink that drips fix it. Those little drips can really add up.

5. Energy Efficient Bulbs: Energy efficient bulbs can really help in reducing your electric payment every single month. Regular bulbs give off a tremendous amount of heat only utilizing more and more power. Energy efficient bulbs stay cool to the touch requiring very little energy to light.

6. Public Transit: Do you live in or near a city and have access to the public transportation system? Try taking a bus or subway a few times per week. This will help in reducing the amount of vehicle toxins in the air.

7. Quit Smoking: Second hand smoke is a very strong pollutant that adds to our rising global warming problem every year. By stopping smoking you not only save your planet but also yourself.

8. Donate: Instead of throwing out old electrical products try donating them to goodwill first. This will reduce the amount of plastic products we have at landfills and help someone who might need what you where just about to throw away.

9. Line Dry: During the summer months or when you can try line drying your clothes. This will tremendously cut back on the amount of power and energy your home is using.

10. Use Ceiling Fans: Ceilings fans use a small fraction of the amount of power an air conditioner uses and many times will give the same effect. Try flicking your ceiling fan on first next time you want to cool down. If it doesn’t help after you have exhausted that option than turn the air conditioning on.

It has been decades since we have been indoctrinated into the 3 Rs for the environment, that is: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. It is a good thing that most North Americans can recite the three Rs, but to better assist mother earth there are several more than we can add. I would posit that the fourth R should be Retrofit.

When you want to update, upgrade or otherwise change a durable item, consider RETROFITTING over replacing. While it does not make sense for some items, when you think about it, many of the things we throw away could have been altered rather than replaced.

A neighbour of mine, for example, is bent on having his windows replaced. He argues that by replacing his windows with newer Low-Emissivity models he will save energy and in turn benefit the environment. While what he suggests is true, he could accomplish the same thing by having his existing windows coated with a Low Emissivity (aka Low-E) window film. Retrofitting his windows in this way will still have the desired energy conservation effect, and keep another set of windows from hitting the landfill. Additionally, my neighbour will also save a great deal of money as installing window film is much less expensive than brand new windows.

Incidentally, window films are also great for the environment if you live in hotter climates too, to help reduce air conditioning costs. So-called solar control window films may be retrofitted to your existing glass to help block solar energy in the form of heat and UV. Solar control window films may cut energy costs by as much as 30%! This is why both the Canadian and U.S. Green Building Councils recognize window film retrofits for L.E.E.D. certification credits.

The opportunities for retrofitting over replacing are almost limitless! Whether it is as simple as placing a brick in your toilet tank to reduce water use (instead of replacing with a low-flow toilet), reupholstering an old but sturdy piece of furniture, or something as technologically advanced as window films, retrofitting is a great way to reduce waste and help the environment.

I know that they pay to recycle aluminum cans, but what other products do they pay for. And if there are any, where? I already recycle everything I can but I figure if I can make a few bucks, why not.

What are some really good websites to buy organic or "green" products for make-up, toothpaste, and household cleaners? I am trying to find these products that contain no harmful chemicals, additives, food coloring, gluten/casien, etc.

I notice many people using their fireplaces and buying wood to burn in fireplaces in the winter months. I am guessing this has to have some impact on the climate like fossil fuels (e.g. coal and forest fires) do. Am I correct? If so how much of an impact does it have? Links and resources to information would be greatly appreciated.
